The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is set to expand its worksite speed control initiative, widely known as the Safe Zones program. Beginning September 15, motorists traveling on I-70 in Hancock County, specifically between the 105-109 mile markers, should brace for a new level of monitoring. This stretch west of Knightstown and east of Greenfield will witness the resumption of Safe Zone deployments, as reported by FOX59.
Beyond Hancock County, the presence of speed cameras will likewise extend to Steuben County. When these cameras go live on the mid-month mark, they aim to enforce speed limits more strictly within designated Safe Zones. From the perspective of a driver like Dodson, there seems to be a reluctant acceptance of the new norm, stating, "I think it's great as long as we get a memo to know that hey, this is what Indiana's going to do," as observed by WRTV. The Safe Zone program carries a tiered penalty system. Drivers exceeding the speed limit by 11 miles per hour or more will first receive a warning. A second infraction incurs a $75 fine, and a third misstep costs $150.
INDOT's implementation of the Safe Zone speed cameras comes with specific conditions for violations to be considered valid. Drivers should be aware that their speeds are monitored, and accordingly, signs are posted to alert the public. Importantly, workers need to be on-site for any speeding violation to hold water. Those issued fines may conveniently settle their dues online, by phone, or by mail within a thirty-day window from the date the notice is sent, as details are afforded by 21Alive News.
The underlying message from transportation officials is clear and focused on safety. Indiana’s Secretary of Transportation and Infrastructure, Matt Ubelhor, emphasized, “I am encouraged by the success we’ve seen so far, and I cannot stress enough the importance of slowing down and avoiding distractions in work zones. We want everyone to go home safe at the end of the day,” as reported by 21Alive News. With INDOT's expansion of the Safe Zones, a new precedence is set in motion for both the well-being of workers and the adherence to road rules by drivers threading through Indiana's arteries of commerce and community.
