In a somber turn of events at Dyer County Jail, an inmate named Deandre Pickering was found unresponsive in his cell early this morning. Officials from the Dyer County Sheriff's Office relayed this news through social media, confirming his death shortly thereafter. Pickering, who was housed alone, became the subject of an urgent response from correction officers and medical personnel, yet efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. The announcement, which aimed to directly inform the public of the tragedy, was made without insinuation of foul play in the incident.
The emergency call took place at approximately 5:38 am, and it rapidly escalated to involve deputies and Medical Center EMS, who pronounced Mr. Pickering deceased. The Dyer County Medical Examiner’s Office was immediately contacted to begin an inquest into the circumstances surrounding Pickering’s death. "We extend our condolences as well as our prayers to the family and friends of Mr. Pickering during this difficult time," Sheriff Jeff Box conveyed in a statement. The Sheriff's Office emphasized that a thorough review would follow to clearly understand how the situation unfolded.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, next of kin notifications have been made, respecting a vital aspect of protocol in such situations. Sheriff Box's statement indicated a promise of thoroughness in the ongoing investigation, spurred by an alliance with the Medical Examiner’s Office. As details continue to surface, the public’s demand for clarity stands alongside their concern for the procedural integrity in the aftermath of an inmate's death.
The agency has ordered an autopsy to more definitively determine the cause of death, a decision that is part of normal procedures. The process, intrinsic to justice and transparency, is meant to offer, if possible, some closure to those affected by the loss. Findings from the investigation, along with the autopsy report and other relevant data, will be forwarded to 29th Judicial District Attorney General Danny Goodman for review. The Dyer County Sheriff's Office seeks to assure the public that they are committed to fully uncover all pertinent details related to this case.
