JK Studios, known for its engaging humor and captivating sketches, is taking a step back, back to the dynamic roots of live performance, that is. The comedy troupe that spun off from the once BYU TV-bound Studio C is heralding a return to what made them a sensation: a live-taped sketch show. Set for Oct. 3-4 at The Covey, this is a treat for fans who've been following the group's journey from their BYU days to their current YouTube success with over half a million subscribers. As Stephen Meek and Whitney Call shared with the City of Provo, “When we were doing it with Divine Comedy, it was more just like, we just want the environment to be fun, we want the energy to stay high for a live experience, and you’re hanging out with us as a part of the gang. I think with our tour right now, we’re trying to fall back on those roots."
The move to again capture lightning in a bottle through the spontaneity of a live audience represents not just a full circle moment but also a reaffirmation of JK Studios' commitment to engaging with their fans directly. "I think a lot of people really wanted that Studio C experience of coming to the studio, being a part of the filming, and that’s the aim here—to make a live recording experience for everyone," Meek expressed, hinting at a desire to potentially distribute these lively laughs through YouTube, social media, and other partnerships. As for the content itself, expect to be served the cream of the comedic crop. “This show we are doing in October, we’ve been compiling over the year our best of the best,” Call described in an interview with the City of Provo.
It's a homecoming for the group whose origins in Divine Comedy glued them together. Those early performances at Brigham Young University laid the groundwork for their eventual proliferation as Studio C, capturing an audience with family-friendly sketch comedy. After a successful stint, they branched out to explore new formats, translating their chemistry into online series like "Freelancers" and "Loving Lyfe", a move that expanded their viewer base and creative horizons.
