The Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) is undergoing a transformation that marks its first anniversary of construction, an elaborate undertaking that's slated to bring additional lanes and enhancements stretching between Interstate 17 and 75th Avenue in the Northwest Valley, according to a recent update by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). The project, with its hefty $140 million budget, commenced in September of 2024 and aims for a spring 2027 culmination.
In a dense operation featuring earthwork, structural bridge enhancements, and frontage road improvements, ADOT reports crews have now finalized 65% of the foundational earthwork, while 55% of the retaining and screen wall construction has been cemented, the girders for widening freeway bridges at 31st and 51st avenues have been installed, and the new LED freeway lighting has been mounted above the median. Motorists who have been rerouting due to the westbound on-ramp at 51st Avenue and eastbound off-ramp at 59th Avenue closures can expect these routes to reopen in the coming weeks, an incremental victory in a series of navigation adjustments.
Further traffic shifts loom on the horizon as additional ramps, the westbound off-ramp at 59th Avenue and the eastbound on-ramp at 67th Avenue included, are pegged for a two-month closure beginning next month, as stated on the ADOT website. Despite these impending changes, ADOT promises continuity in keeping the public informed with real-time updates accessible at azdot.gov/Loop101-75th-ave-I-17.
This expansive project is a joint venture bolstered by the collaboration between ADOT and the local governing bodies of Phoenix and Glendale, alongside the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), which functions as the metropolitan planning organization for the greater Phoenix area, intricately weaved into the regional transport tapestry via the MAG's Regional Transportation Plan and funded in part by Proposition 400—a voter-approved sales tax initiative dedicated to transportation improvements.
