On Wednesday, September 3, 2025, a man identified as Dontrell Cooper was charged with two counts of attempted murder of Chicago police officers, a grave reminder of the violence that law enforcement personnel might face on the job. According to a news release posted on the Chicago Police Department's website, the 30-year-old was taken into custody after being linked to an incident that took place six years prior, where gunfire was aimed at officers in the Englewood neighborhood.
The series of events that led to Cooper's arrest began on August 11, 2019, when someone fired shots toward two officers on duty in the 200 block of W. 63rd St., within the jurisdiction of the 7th District, thankfully, no injuries were reported to the officers. The suspect, residing on the 6000 block of S. Elizabeth St., managed to evade immediate detection, leading to an investigation that spanned several years before his apprehension without incident on September 1, 2025, in the 5600 block of S. Maryland Ave.
The detention hearing for Cooper is scheduled to take place at the courthouse located at 2600 S. California Ave. No further information about the case has been disclosed to the public as of yet, pending the legal proceedings that will soon be unfolding.
