Miami-Dade County is on the brink of establishing a new Community-Based Organization (CBO) Trust Fund after a recent vote by the County Commission. Championed by Vice Chairman Kionne L. McGhee, this fund aims to provide a sustainable financial source for nonprofits and CBOs that deliver critical human and social services to the community. According to the official county release, the trust is fueled by a percentage of eligible County purchases and has the potential to support these organizations for many generations.

The move has been met with applause from local nonprofit leaders. Amanda Altman, CEO of Kristi House, told Miami-Dade County, “This Trust Fund represents a model for the future. Nonprofits and community-based organizations are often called to do the most with the least. With this dedicated resource, we can continue protecting, healing, and empowering the most vulnerable in our community—not just today, but for decades to come.”

Vice Chairman McGhee emphasized the significance of the Trust Fund in preserving the frontline efforts of CBOs. "Every single day, our CBOs and nonprofits are on the frontlines—fighting poverty, lifting families, and saving lives. Too often, their hard work and resources are stretched thin. With this Trust Fund, we are saying loud and clear: your work matters, and we will preserve it. This is about honoring their sacrifice, safeguarding their mission, and ensuring that the people of Miami-Dade are never left behind," McGhee stated in a release from the county.

The ordinance continues Miami-Dade County’s practice of creating trust funds to address community needs, such as the Affordable Housing Trust Fund. The new measure establishes the Miami-Dade CBO Trust Fund, designed to provide long-term financial support for nonprofit organizations.
