The Deering Estate, a historical landmark and cultural hub in Miami, is set to host an imaginative concert by Artist-in-Residence Susana Behar. Titled 'Imagining the Soundtrack of Charles Deering’s World,' this event aims to reflect on the possible auditory experiences of Charles Deering, an art collector and preservationist known for his diverse interests. The concert is scheduled for October 5, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. inside the estate's Visitor's Center Theater, according to Miami-Dade County's official release. Tickets are priced at $20 and can be purchased online, inviting attendees to a cocktail reception that will follow the performance.
Behar, who has been the estate's Artist-in-Residence since 2023, will lend her voice to the evening, supported by musicians Michel Gonzalez on guitar, Adolfo Herrera on percussion, Magela Herrera with flute and backing vocals, and Elvis Martinez on bass. Each artist brings a unique background to the event, spanning various geographies and genres, suggesting a diverse exploration of the potential soundscape that might have surrounded Deering's life and travels. Despite the impossibility to know exactly the music he loved, the artists pose to offer a sensory experience that might resonate with a man of Deering's cultural affinities and worldliness.
Susana Behar is lauded not only for her soulful performances but also for her ability to navigate myriad cultural influences in her music. A blend of Latin American, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, and contemporary elements characterizes her sound. She has a record of prestigious performances including at the Kennedy Center in 2024 and the Library of Congress in 2025, with her contribution to the documentary 'Adio Kerida' and collaborations with the National Arab Orchestra and ANUSIM noted in Miami-Dade County's announcement. Her role in these events and her albums like 'TAPIZ' solidify her place as an artist who bridges cultures through music.
The Deering Estate functions as a house museum, cultural and ecological center, and national landmark, highlighting its role in preserving local history, protecting the environment, and offering cultural experiences. Its arts programs receive support from the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, with more details on their mission and efforts provided by the official release. The Deering Estate Foundation, established in 1989, serves as the philanthropic partner striving to carry forward Charles Deering's legacy, while also funding scientific pursuits to preserve the estate's ecological diversity.
