Miami-Dade County Parks is charting a course to transform parking spaces into hubs of community interaction with its celebration of Park(ing) Day. Scheduled for Sept. 19, from 9 a.m. to noon, this event will unfold at the Brickell Metrorail Station. Here, parking spots will be reshaped into public parks for a brief moment, creating a canvas for walking, biking, and social activities, as per the county's official announcement.
Initially sparked in San Francisco back in 2005, Park(ing) Day is today a worldwide expression that campaigns for streets that are not only safer and greener but also champions for equitable access. As per a statement by Miami-Dade County Parks, the local iteration of this global movement sees a collaboration with various organizations, which include the Transportation Planning Organization, the Department of Transportation and Public Works, and the likes of Bike305 and Transit Alliance Miami.
Several Miami organizations are joining forces to bring Park(ing) Day to the city. Alongside transportation and urban planning agencies, Miami-Dade Public Schools, the Public Library System, The Underline, and the Downtown Development Authority are supporting the event. Admission is free, but with parking expected to be limited, attendees are encouraged to use public transit options such as the Metrorail, Metromover, and The Underline for easier access.
