Montgomery County schools are receiving over $135,000 from Indiana’s Secured School Safety Grant Program, part of a $27 million statewide effort to improve school security. The funds will support safety measures across Crawfordsville Community Schools, North Montgomery Community School Corp., and South Montgomery Community School Corp., with grants of approximately $46,250 and $43,475 for each district.
As per the Indiana House Republicans, Indiana lawmakers recently moved the Office of School Safety into the Department of Homeland Security to centralize efforts. State Rep. Beau Baird (R-Greencastle) highlighted the legislature’s investment in school safety this year.
According to State Rep. Matt Commons (R-Williamsport), the funds can be used for school resource officers, equipment, technology, and active event warning systems. State Rep. Mark Genda (R-Frankfort) noted that Indiana has allocated more than $214 million to school safety through matching grants since 2013. State Rep. Jeff Thompson (R-Lizton), chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, stated that the new two-year state budget increases funding for the grant program.
