Downtown Indianapolis became a nucleus of police activity as shots rang out leading to multiple arrests. In a social media post from IMPD News, authorities detailed the apprehension of four individuals following a gun-related incident last Saturday. Officers on patrol near the 100 block of E South St were alerted to gunfire just before 2:30 a.m., subsequently discovering a crime scene punctuated by vehicles hit by bullets and several shell casings.

Two suspects were detained on the scene; Joshua Vaughn was arrested on a warrant, and Ron Paul for unlawfully carrying a handgun with a prior conviction. As investigators worked, a car tied to the incident entered the parking lot, but fled after ignoring officers' signals, initiating a pursuit that ended with another arrest, 26-year-old Dajaymeon Cantrell. A dropped cellphone by one of the fleeing suspects unlocked this tangled affair further, leading to the arrest of James Gary Jr., found at a residence displayed by the phone's directions.

IMPD's press statement recounted how a nearby hospital received an adult male with a gunshot wound believed to be connected to these events. The search of the vehicle from which several suspects fled yielded a firearm, accessories, and indications of drug activity. This firearm's caliber matched the casings found at the crime scene, implicating its possible use in the shooting.

Cantrell and Gary Jr., aside from resisting law enforcement, faced charges related to drugs. With the investigation ongoing, detectives are currently piecing together additional video evidence to fully understand the sequence of events leading up to the shooting, "Forensic evidence will determine if the firearm(s) recovered and the individuals arrested were involved in the shooting," per the IMPD post.

While charges have been levied in this case, the Marion County Prosecutor's Office is to ultimately decide on these matters, reminding the community that an arrest is not an automatic assumption of guilt.
