The incident, which took place in the 1600 block of 164th Street, began when officers responded to a call about a stabbing. However, upon arrival, authorities found no victim, suggesting the possibility of a fabricated emergency by the individual, as reported by NBC Miami.
Walking the streets with a knife, after the police commanded the man to drop it, "he refused and charged at officers," leading to one officer firing their weapon, as per statements acquired by NBC Miami. The man, wounded in the encounter, was taken to the hospital in stable condition. Nearby, residents, who approached the taped-off crime scene, were disturbed by the unusual altercation, with one neighbor expressing that the neighborhood is typically tranquil.
Adding context to the shooting, North Miami Beach Police Department Chief Juan Pinillos delineated how the initial call they received reported a male stabbing a victim around 9:40 a.m., according to Local 10 News. The scene, with a heavy police presence, exhibited several evidence markers as investigators collected items and scrutinized the area for clues.
"The officers gave the male several verbal commands to drop the knife and then charged at the officers," Pinillos relayed to Local 10 News. Authorities are contemplating the individual's motives, suggesting "it could have been a suicide by cop, could have been someone in a mental crisis that was seeking a different alternative." In fact, a family member intimated to Local 10 News that the suspect, a 21-year-old man, grapples with mental health challenges.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is carrying out the investigation into the shooting, as per usual protocol for incidents involving the use of a police firearm.
