A Pinellas County Schools employee has been arrested and charged with child abuse following an incident involving a 6-year-old autistic student. The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office reported that the 65-year-old substitute classroom assistant, David Jones, was working in a special needs classroom at Oakhurst Elementary School when the event occurred.
The situation unfolded on Monday when, after lunch, the semi-verbal child began hitting and kicking, which deputies recognized as a form of communication for the individual. Jones, however, responded with a force that has since led to his arrest. "Jones swung a lunch box containing a metal canister, striking the victim in the face," according to PCSO's officials, resulting in a welt on the young victim's forehead.
Jones was taken into custody the following day after he admitted to the incident, characterizing his action as a "knee jerk" reaction. Despite his familiarity with the special needs status of the student, Jones now faces charges for his conduct. His apprehension was facilitated without delay, leading him to be processed at the Pinellas County Jail.
Pinellas County Schools has yet to comment on the specifics of Jones’s employment, redirecting inquiries to their administration. However, the implications of such an act have resounded through the corridors of Oakhurst Elementary, leaving concerned parents, staff, and the wider community awaiting further clarifications. The investigation into this matter is ongoing, with developments expected to surface as more information comes to light.
