The day's events unfolded with restraint, as the police reported no injuries or significant altercations during the march itself, according to a statement on the PPB's official website.
Despite the peaceful nature of the march, tensions bubbled near the ICE facility in South Portland. A vehicle became momentarily trapped within the crowd but was able to exit the situation safely after officers intervened. The PPB's "Dialogue Officers" were credited with diffusing the potential standoff. Later, the event was marred by physical confrontations amongst individuals with dissenting stances, these skirmishes were closely monitored by officers on the scene.
The evening took a turn when the PPB made two arrests. According to their release, a 17-year-old from Milwaukie faced charges for fourth-degree assault, apprehended near the intersection of South Bond Avenue and South Abernathy Street. Approximately 30 minutes later, Rapid Response Team members arrested 38-year-old Nathan McFarland of Portland, encountering no resistance and disengaging promptly after taking him into custody.
Throughout these events, the PPB maintained a clear stance of non-engagement in immigration enforcement, adhering to the guidelines of PPB Directive 810.10. The officers' primary concern was the preservation of public safety while respecting the boundaries of their authority.
