Yesterday morning, a rideshare driver in Miami Beach encountered a chilling scenario when a passenger produced a gun and discharged a weapon during the trip. NBC Miami reports that the incident began after the driver collected the suspect on the 1200 block of Ocean Drive.
The tension escalated as the car journeyed to Miami, where at one point, the passenger drew a firearm, warning the driver not to look back and to continue driving. The gun was fired into the air — thankfully, without causing physical harm to the driver. Following the incident, the suspect made an escape, and, as details emerged, the driver safely parked and signaled for assistance, a moment captured on nearby surveillance footage.
Uber, responding to the harrowing experience their driver went through, expressed relief that the individual was unharmed and made clear they had revoked the rider’s access to their service, "We removed the rider’s access to the Uber app as soon as this was reported to us and stand ready to assist law enforcement with their investigation however we can," the rideshare company said in a statement obtained by NBC Miami.
While the investigation by authorities is ongoing, the Miami Beach Police have not confirmed an arrest is made, they maintain that there is no active danger to the public. "Our victim did exactly what we urge anyone to do in that case — remain calm, comply, and seek safety when you can do so," Officer Christopher Bess of Miami Beach Police told NBC Miami.
According to a WSVN report, the passenger fired the gun as they exited the vehicle at the drop-off point, Northeast Third Street and 82nd Terrace in Miami. Both sources confirm that no injuries were reported from the incident and emphasize the continuing efforts of the police to investigate the matter.
