The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of one of its own, K9 Appie, who served the community with distinction before passing away on September 28, 2025, as shared in a recent Facebook post. Appie, a dedicated dual-purpose K9, served alongside Deputy Sarah Blair in the RCSO Patrol Division from March 2019 until his retirement in 2024.
During his tenure, Appie's contributions to law enforcement were significant, and he was honored alongside Deputy Blair as Deputy of the Month in January of 2023 following an apprehension on Interstate 24, in addition to receiving a Life Saver's Award for locating a suicidal man in October of 2022, a recognition of his vital role in community safety and law enforcement efforts K9 Appie was well-loved for his ability to balance his policing duties with community outreach, often engaging with children’s groups where he would perform demonstrations, and he was known for his affable nature around children who enjoyed meeting and petting him. Following his retirement, Appie was diagnosed with Degenerative Myelopathy and received care from Project K9 Hero, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting retired Police K-9s and Military Working Dogs.
The outpouring of support and remembrance for K9 Appie underscores the deep bond between service animals and their handlers, as well as the community they serve, Deputy Blair remarked on the loss of her partner, stating, "He loved his Kong toy, his partner and his best little girl," a sentiment that reflects the personal connections forged in the line of duty, according to the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office's social media post.
