South Florida Academics in Hot Water over Charlie Kirk Death Remarks: UM Neurologist Resigned, FAU Professor Suspended

Two academic staff members from South Florida institutions have faced disciplinary actions following the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. At the University of Miami, Dr. Michelle Bravo, a neurologist, resigned from her position after her post commenting on Kirk's death surfaced online. The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine expressed regret at the "unacceptable public commentary" made by Bravo, making clear she no longer maintained her employment there, NBC Miami reported.

The remarks that led to Bravo's departure took aim at Kirk's past statements about violence, drawing a parallel between his assassination and the historical violence against Palestinians, according to NBC Miami. The university maintained that while freedom of speech is a fundamental right, expressions that condone or endorse violence or go against institutional policies are not tolerated, as evident in the statement released and in the swift action to sever ties with the neurologist.

Concurrently, Florida Atlantic University confirmed the suspension of a tenured faculty member over social media comments related to Kirk's assassination, still, the identity of said faculty member remains undisclosed, WSVN News reported. FAU President Adam Hasner emphasized the importance of civil discourse and respect within the academic community, irrespective of political affiliation, sentiments echoed in his statement obtained by the media outlet.

The aftermath of Kirk's killing, which took place during an event at Utah Valley University, has triggered diverse reactions on social media, posts containing prayers and tributes for Kirk and his family are mixed with more contentious takes, Bravo's included. The broader community is gearing up for Kirk's memorial service scheduled for September 21 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
