A deadly shooting has been reported by the Salt Lake City Police Department in the Sugar House neighborhood. According to a news release by the Police, the fatal incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, and the department's Homicide Squad is leading the investigation. The assault took place at around 12:18 a.m., at 1300 East Wilson Ave, where officers found a critically wounded 20-year-old man.
Despite rapid response from Gold Cross and the Salt Lake City Fire and immediate transport to a local hospital, the young man succumbed to his injuries, marking a tragic end to the lifesaving efforts. The Police informed that the altercation started as an argument between two groups, which rapidly deteriorated into a violent encounter. During the scuffle, 24-year-old Cesar Gonzalez Juarez reportedly drew a firearm and shot the victim multiple times. Salt Lake City Police Department stated that Juarez was apprehended shortly after the shooting and has been incarcerated at the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on homicide related charges.
Charges against Juarez, however, remain just allegations as he is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, reiterated the Police. Juarez's booking photo will not be released barring a conviction, as per Utah law, which maintains strict conditions under which incarceration images might be shared with the public. The Salt Lake Police emphasized the confidentiality of such records in their statement.
The SLCPD Homicide Squad, which takes the lead on all homicides in the city, will collaborate with the medical examiner to establish the definitive cause of death and to ensure the victim's family is notified. While the victim's identity remains to be officially confirmed, the Homicide Squad is known for its dedication to investigating not only homicides but also cases of suspicious deaths, suicides, and missing persons within Salt Lake County. As the case remains under investigation, the department has withheld further details, and neither the Public Information Officer nor the On-Duty Watch Commander is currently available for interviews, as noted by the Salt Lake City Police Department.
