Tragedy struck the Sheridan Park neighborhood on Chicago's North Side late Friday night when an 18-year-old man was shot and killed, and a woman was left injured. According to ABC7 Chicago, the incident occurred in the 1200 block of West Sunnyside Avenue around 11:50 p.m.
The young man, identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as Stephan R. Hammond, was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to his head and was later pronounced dead at Illinois Masonic Hospital. The other victim, a 27-year-old woman, suffered a gunshot wound to the arm but was in good condition at the same hospital. Police have yet to publicly identify any suspects, and they have currently managed not to take anyone into custody. Four firearms were reportedly recovered from the scene of the shooting as the Area Three detectives continue to investigate the matter.
Further details on the shooting were scarce. Fox32 Chicago confirmed the timing of the police response at approximately 11:49 p.m., with the officers discovering both victims shortly thereafter. Despite the quick response, the evening ended in tragedy for Hammond and left another wounded in what seems to be an all-too-common occurrence in the city.
The shooting in Sheridan Park adds to the growing concerns over gun violence in Chicago, though official statements from the police have not indicated a motive or the circumstances leading up to the incident.
