Calling all licensed hunters and fishers: there's an open invitation to celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day in true sportsperson's style. Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is hosting a free day at two of their premier shooting ranges on September 27, a Saturday reserved nationwide to honor the hunter and angler traditions. Utah Wildlife News reported that those who can present a valid current hunting, fishing, or combination license will enjoy free shooting at both the Lee Kay Public Shooting Range and the Cache Valley Public Shooting Range.
Established by Utah state code in 1973, National Hunting and Fishing Day holds a special resonance in the state, reflecting the substantial contributions of hunters and fishermen to wildlife management in Utah. Offering free access to the rifle, handgun, shotgun facilities, and the archery ranges, the DWR recognizes these individuals' efforts in funding wildlife conservation projects that are crucial for maintaining diverse and healthy wildlife populations. According to Utah Wildlife News, DWR's Riley Peck said, "Hunters and anglers are the backbone of wildlife conservation in the U.S." With the added perk of one free round of trap, skeet, or five-stand sporting clays, sportspersons are invited to show either a paper or electronic version of their license for entry on the day.
Located in Salt Lake City, the Lee Kay Public Shooting Range will throw open its doors at 6000 W. 2100 South, while enthusiasts can also head over to the Cache Valley Public Shooting Range at 2851 W. 200 North in Logan. Both ranges are said to offer, by Gary Cook, the DWR Hunter Education, Ranges and Shooting Sports Programs Coordinator, "Really fun outing for the whole family." There's even a year-round promotion, as detailed by Utah Wildlife News, for the newly purchased firearm or archery equipment, allowing buyers to shoot for free or at a discounted rate within 30 days of their purchase, with proof of purchase necessary.
