Drivers planning to navigate the north Phoenix area this weekend should prepare for detours as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) launches the expansion of the northbound Interstate 17 off-ramp to Loop 303/Sonoran Desert Drive. Starting from 10 p.m. last Friday, Sept. 5, until 5 a.m. tomorrow, Sept. 8, the off-ramp will be entirely closed to traffic, according to ADOT.
As laid out by the department, the project envisages a second lane and additional improvements at the exit, anticipated for completion in early 2026, while drivers can circumvent the closure this weekend by exiting at Dove Valley Road and either heading west to tap into southbound 43rd Avenue to reach Loop 303 or opting for eastbound Dove Valley Road to go south on North Valley Parkway to access Sonoran Desert Drive. An increase in traffic and potential delays are expected as travelers adjust to the new arrangements and search for alternative routes.
This off-ramp expansion marks the beginning of a string of augmentations for the freeways, with ADOT coordinating closely with the Maricopa Association of Governments to plan for future undertakings. One such initiative, set to commence in 2026, will aim to widen Loop 303 between 51st Avenue and I-17, and create straightaway connections between the two major routes, the ADOT detailed.
Anyone seeking further information regarding the current and upcoming projects can tap into ADOT's dedicated webpage at azdot.gov/L303LakePleasantI-17, meanwhile, for real-time highway conditions drivers can visit AZ511.gov or download the AZ511 app free for Apple and Android devices, ADOT also keeps the public informed with current highway conditions updates through its Twitter feed, @ArizonaDOT.
