A Tennessee family narrowly avoided a potentially devastating fire, thanks to the timely alert of their smoke alarms. Last Thursday, just after the stroke of midnight, a mini cosmetics fridge malfunctioned and ignited a blaze in a child's bedroom at their Williamson County home. According to WSMV, the alarms woke the family and allowed them to quickly and safely evacuate.
Firefighting units from Stations 21 and 22, accompanied by captains from Williamson County Emergency Management Agency and emergency medical services, responded rapidly to extinguish the fire. Upon arrival, they found the fire contained to one bedroom wall. Further investigation revealed the fire started by a malfunction of a mini cosmetics fridge, as was reported by Williamson Source. The timely response prevented further damage, and no injuries were reported.
In a social media post by Williamson County Fire/Rescue, they highlighted the importance of functioning smoke alarms. "We are thankful that the family had WORKING smoke alarms in their home that likely saved their lives!" read the statement pulled from Williamson County Fire/Rescue's Facebook page. They further urged the public to ensure smoke alarms are less than ten years old and functioning correctly.
Both the Williamson Source and WSMV stressed the importance of regular checks and maintenance of smoke alarms as a critical safety measure. In the aftermath of this event, Williamson County Fire/Rescue is emphasizing to homeowners the need to not just regularly check their alarms, but to replace them if they have reached or surpassed a decade in service. Their reminder comes as a stark measure to potentially avoid tragic outcomes in the unexpected advent of household fires.
