Tragedy struck in Alsip, Illinois, late Monday night when police responded to a threatening situation that ended in the death of a female suspect. According to ABC7 Chicago, the incident began when Alsip police received calls around 10 p.m. from a woman claiming she was being pursued by an active shooter. The caller escalated the situation by stating she was armed, had already killed a police officer, and was prepared to kill another.
The woman's phone was tracked to Burr Oak Cemetery, leading officers to the scene. As CBS News Chicago reported, upon the officers' arrival, the suspect fled, scaling a fence and crossing busy Cicero Avenue. Despite commands to stop, the chase continued until the woman reportedly turned and pointed what appeared to be a firearm at the officers.
The encounter reached its fatal climax when an officer, faced with the perceived threat, discharged their weapon at the suspect. "She eventually turned and pointed "a firearm" at officers," Alsip Police detailed, a series of events which led to her being shot by an officer. After being critically wounded, life-saving measures were initiated immediately by both the police and Alsip fire crews.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital; however, she succumbed to her injuries. At the scene, authorities discovered that the weapon in question was a replica Colt firearm. "A replica Colt firearm was recovered on the scene," police confirmed. Despite the distressing series of events, police have assured the public that this was an isolated incident, with no further threat posed to the community.
In the aftermath, the Alsip Police Department has sought the assistance of the Illinois State Police, Public Integrity Unit, to investigate the details surrounding the shooting.
