Bay Area drivers planning road trips to Arizona this weekend should anticipate significant delays due to freeway improvement projects. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced closures affecting major routes, notably on the Northbound Loop 101 and Eastbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway), as part of the ongoing efforts to improve traffic flow and safety. These projects are expected to cause disruptions from October 31 through November 3.

Specifically, the Northbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) will be entirely shut down between Shea Boulevard and Princess Drive/Pima Road starting from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday, November 3. Also affected are the on-ramps at Via de Ventura and 90th Street. ADOT advises travelers to seek alternate paths, such as the westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) connecting to northbound State Route 51, according to a publication by ADOT. For those exiting northbound Loop 101 at Shea Boulevard, a detour via west to northbound Scottsdale Road is available.

In tandem, the Eastbound Loop 202's Gilbert Road on-ramp will be out of commission from 10 p.m. Friday to noon on Sunday, November 2, to accommodate the widening project. Motorists are encouraged to use Cooper or Lindsay roads to enter eastbound Loop 202 during this period. While these closures are orchestrated for improvement, they pose a test to the patience and adaptability of travelers.

These weekend restrictions are part of a larger transportation vision for the Maricopa County region, supported by Proposition 400, a voter-approved sales tax initiative from 2004, and recently buttressed by Proposition 479, which extends the existing tax to fund future projects, according to ADOT. Be it weather or other unforeseen factors, schedules are subject to change, an important consideration for those setting out on the road.

For real-time updates on highway conditions, ADOT recommends using their Arizona Traveler Information site at AZ511.gov, the AZ511 app, or by simply dialing 511. With these resources at hand, drivers can better navigate the temporary disruptions as the state works to bolster its transportation infrastructure.
