Communities often thrive on the accomplishments of their educators and volunteers, and Canyons District is no exception. The district recently honored 11 individuals who have made significant contributions to the education and well-being of students, staff, and the broader community, according to Canyons District. The Apex Awards ceremony, a red-carpet affair, took place at Butler Middle School yesterday.

The most prestigious of these awards, the Legacy Award, was presented to Nancy Tingey, former Canyons Board of Education President. During a tumultuous period marked by a global health crisis, Tingey was credited with possessing the traits necessary to guide the district through uncertain times. "Nancy's levelheadedness and insights are unmatched," Board of Education President Amber Shill remarked, as per Canyons District. "Through the ups and downs of the past 10 years, Nancy has remained a steady, positive influence on the District."

Midvale Elementary's Lucía de la Cruz Rodriguez claimed the Apex Award for Teacher of the Year, celebrated for her work as a DLI teacher. School Administrator of the Year went to Indian Hills Middle Principal Shelly Karren, who has served more than 20 years in education. The District Administrator of the Year Award was shared between Kirsten Stewart, guiding public relations and marketing, and Shana Lowe, responsible for the district's accounting and smooth payroll management.

Draper Mayor Troy K. Walker received accolades for Elected Official of the Year. His ongoing partnership and support for the Canyons District were highlighted, beginning from his days on the Draper City Council and continuing into his mayoral tenure. Education Support Professionals of the Year went to two individuals: Kathy Hilton, who has contributed significantly since the inception of Corner Canyon, and Charlotte B. Graham, with an astounding 47 years at East Midvale Elementary as head secretary.
