An alleged high-ranking member of the Latin Kings street gang in Chicago has been charged with attempting to solicit the murder of a senior law enforcement official, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois reported on Monday. The official targeted was involved in "Operation Midway Blitz," an immigration enforcement operation, according to a federal complaint.
Juan Espinoza Martinez, 37, is facing one count of murder-for-hire following statements alleged in a Snapchat message where he offered "2k on information when you get him" and "10k if u take him down," along with a photo of the targeted law enforcement officer. Martinez was arrested, and although his initial court appearance date is not yet set, the consequences could be severe in light of the charges.
Comments from officials convey the gravity of the situation. "Placing a bounty on the head of a federal officer is an attack on the rule of law and on every American who depends on law enforcement to keep them safe," stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche.
Matthew J. Scarpino, the Special Agent-in-Charge of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations in Chicago, reinforced the commitment to dismantle violent gangs. "The arrest of this ruthless and violent member of the Latin Kings, a criminal organization notorious for its cruelty and disregard for the law, highlights the steadfast commitment of Homeland Security Investigations and our law enforcement partners to protect our communities and those who uphold justice," he said.
