Residents in the Roseland neighborhood of Chicago have been put on high alert due to a series of aggravated vehicular hijackings in the 5th (Calumet) District. According to a community alert issued by the Chicago Police Department (CPD), there have been multiple incidents where victims faced armed individuals who demanded their vehicles and personal belongings at gunpoint.
The CPD has reported specific incidents occurring on the 11800 block of South Parnell Ave on October 6, the 200 block of East 121st Pl on October 9, and the 11700 block of South Parnell Ave on October 13, each event unfolding in the Roseland neighborhood. The suspects have been described as wearing all black clothing and masks, carrying armaments of black handguns. In light of these events, the CPD is urging the community to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activities they witness.
Authorities are on the lookout for one to three male African American suspects, and the police are asking anyone with information to come forward. The offenders have been seen armed with black handguns during the robberies. Public cooperation is being emphasized as an essential part of addressing these crimes, with the CPD asking individuals to pay attention to any unique features of the assailants, such as scars, limps, or distinct dental characteristics.
As the investigation continues, the CPD is imparting safety tips to the community, advising people to remain aware and calm if confronted, and to never pursue fleeing assailants but instead provide all information to the authorities; the CPD also recommends saving any video surveillance footage and taking witness contact information after an incident and importantly always remember to dial 9-1-1 and if possible, to remain on scene until law enforcement arrives. The CPD encourages arranging transactions in safe public spaces like police stations to deter possible threats.
