In the Clairemont Mesa district, a notable stride was taken towards addressing the affordable housing crisis with celebrations for the grand opening of two developments on Mt. Etna Drive. The Modica and Taormina buildings join the Paul Downey Senior Residence in expanding the housing options for those in need, offering a mix of one to three-bedroom apartments. This initiative is part of the broader Mt. Etna Campus project, aimed at providing stable housing at reasonable costs.
The new properties signify an increase in availability and the dedication of various entities to tackle the housing shortage head-on. Out of the 230 total units inaugurated, 73 are assigned for permanent supportive housing, an essential component in social support services. According to the County of San Diego, the ongoing development plans, including a fourth building set for completion in early 2026, will culminate in 404 affordable homes that are locked in at low rates for the next 55 years.
The collaborative effort that led to this multi-phase progression combines public and private investments, with the County contributing $15 million and a parcel of land appraised at $21 million. Chelsea Investment Corp. spearheads the development phase, while Serving Seniors delivers supportive services. These efforts signify a commitment to constructing buildings and fostering a community with accessible essential services such as grocery stores, schools, and public transportation.
Such undertakings exemplify the potential of strategic partnerships in addressing housing challenges. With over $327 million pumped into the affordable housing sector since 2017, the County's efforts have yielded over 2,900 homes. Among these, 1,800 units are reserved for senior residents, and with an additional 3,000 units in the pipeline, the future seems to be set on a course toward greater housing accessibility.
