The Tennessee Sports Wagering Council (SWC) is tightening the reins on illegal sports betting operations within the state. Three more unauthorized entities, BetWhale.ag, Kickr, and ReBet have ceased their Tennessee operations following the SWC's enforcement actions. BetWhale.ag, an offshore sportsbook, was handed a $50,000 fine along with its cease and desist order, highlighting the SWC's commitment to upholding the law.
With a compelling online sports betting market, Tennessee saw a total of $5.6 billion bet online last fiscal year. This figure puts the state at the forefront as the largest online-only sports betting market in the nation. The SWC has emphasized its dedication to maintaining a safe and regulated environment for Tennesseans looking to place their bets.
Executive Director Mary Beth Thomas has reiterated the importance of engaging only with sanctioned sportsbooks. "We encourage all Tennessee sports betting customers to remember it is important to use legal, licensed sportsbooks to protect your own personal and financial information," Thomas stated, per the Tennessee Sports Wagering Council. She also reinforced that the presence of a website or app is not an indication of legality, prompting consumers to check the SWC's official listings for licensed operations.
The Tennessee Sports Gaming Act clearly outlines the requirements for licensed sportsbooks, ensuring they provide necessary protections for the bettors. This includes maintaining reserves to cover all wagers and protecting the personal and financial details of their customers. Furthermore, these entities are bound by law to adhere to strict guidelines, which prohibit credit card wagers and under-21 betting. Despite these stringent mandates, the lure of unregulated operations continues to test the SWC's resolve in safeguarding consumers.
