Pop phenomenon Dua Lipa gave her San Francisco fans at the Chase Center an unexpected treat during her "Radical Optimism" tour. In a surprise move, the artist brought out Billie Joe Armstrong, frontman of the legendary punk band Green Day, for a nostalgic rendition of "Wake Me Up When September Ends." SF GATE reported a fan's video captured the duet, and the audience's sing-along could be heard clearly as the two artists merged their contrasting styles.
Lipa's history of covering local artists at her shows continued with this collaboration. Before introducing Armstrong, the "Levitating" singer expressed her adoration for the local music scene, saying, per SF GATE, "I thought about San Francisco. I thought about all the incredible music that has come out of it. I thought about one band in particular that would be perfect." Lipa's connection to Green Day runs deep, as she recalled listening to their album "American Idiot," which features "Wake Me Up When September Ends," during her childhood.
The second night of Lipa's stint at the Chase Center also honored another Bay Area icon, the SF Chronicle highlights, with a powerful performance of "Piece of My Heart," known for its association with Janis Joplin. Her sentimental tributes are not just a nod to the Bay Area, as her recent shows in Los Angeles and New York saw her share the stage with icons like Gwen Stefani, Lenny Kravitz, Nile Rodgers, and Alicia Keys.
At 30, Dua Lipa has established herself as a definitive voice in contemporary pop. Born in London and partly raised in Kosovo, she began her ascent to fame with YouTube covers before her debut album in 2017 brought her into the limelight with hits like "New Rules." Her subsequent album, "Future Nostalgia," earned multiple Grammy awards, pushing her into global stardom. Her latest work, "Radical Optimism," explores themes of resilience and joy, and includes collaborations with the likes of Kevin Parker of Tame Impala and producer Danny L Harle.
Looking ahead, Lipa's tour will continue with performances in Seattle and eventually wind down the Americas to Mexico City. Speculations are already swirling around who might be the next local legend to join her on stage. Lipa keeps the spirit of surprise and homage alive within her "Radical Optimism" tour.
