Early Monday morning, tragedy struck on the Dan Ryan Expressway when a driver was fatally injured by a large object that crashed through their windshield. Illinois State Police responded to the scene on I-94 southbound at 29th Street just after 5 a.m., where they found the vehicle involved in a single-vehicle crash. The driver suffered severe injuries after being struck by the object and was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital, according to a WGNTV report.
The express lanes on the outbound side of the Dan Ryan (I-90/94) had to be closed down for several hours to allow for an investigation into the fatal incident. Traffic was heavily affected, with significant delays expected as the lanes between the Stevenson Expressway (I-55) and 31st Street were inaccessible during the closure. However, at approximately 8:30 a.m., the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications confirmed that the lanes were reopened, as reported by NBC Chicago.
Authorities have yet to release further details regarding the nature of the large object that caused the fatal crash, and an investigation is currently underway. The identity of the driver was not immediately disclosed, pending notification of next of kin.
