Five individuals have been detained following a high-speed pursuit on I-80 after allegedly stealing over $30,000 worth of Amazon merchandise from a Channahon facility. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the suspects, identified as Raequan T. Williams, Shaquetta M. Capps, Stephaun L. Dennis, Malcom J. Meeks, and Aqeel S. Bell, were charged with theft and several other offenses related to their alleged evasion of law enforcement.
The chase originated in Channahon after police received reports around 11:10 a.m. of a group transferring large boxes from an Amazon facility. Responding at high speeds, officials sighted a U-Haul van along with a silver SUV hastily departing from the scene. During the pursuit, a tire deflation device was deployed successfully, which eventually brought the U-Haul to a halt on I-80 near Briggs Street, close to Joliet, ABC 7 Chicago reports.
The silver SUV also faced a similar fate; after fleeing from police and having its tires disabled by spike strips, the suspects sought escape on foot, leading to the eventual capture of three, with one suspect still unaccounted for. The detained suspects now wait for a detention hearing at the Will County courthouse.
Channahon police are continuing the investigation into the incident. The suspects taken into custody range from 23 to 31 years old and face multiple charges, including resisting or obstructing a peace officer and aggravated fleeing and attempting to elude peace officers. With one suspect still at large, authorities remain vigilant, inviting any information regarding the individual's whereabouts.
