A former treasurer for the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) at Imagine Charter School in Coral Springs has landed in hot water amidst allegations of embezzlement. Coral Springs Police have taken Rebecca Sanon, 51, into custody on charges including grand theft, scheme to defraud, and criminal use of personal identity, as reported by NBC Miami. An auditor's nightmare unfolded when a PTO event's coffers were found to be surprisingly lightweight, sporting a balance that was "significantly lower than expected," according to an arrest report obtained by NBC Miami.
A closer inspection by Coral Springs police revealed that Sanon, who handled the PTO treasurer position from August 2020 to around July or August 2024, had allegedly plucked over $44,000 from the PTO's funds through various channels. Suspicion had already been brewing among other board members prior to the discovery in July 2024, as they dug into discrepancies noted while gearing up for a school function. As per an affidavit cited by 7News, these transactions spanned ATM cash-outs, debit charges at locations including Walmart and Sam’s Club, and a series of digital transfers.
When Sanon graced the courtroom, she received a bond setting of $20,000 and was directed to steer clear from any contact with the victims. Following this development, when 7News sought a response from her residence, Sanon opted to withhold comment. The fallout from the scandal has left parents reeling, with one parent telling 7News, "This is very, very sad to hear something like that," and another expressing they were "irate," given that the money was intended for the betterment of the school community.
In talks with Sanon, detectives were led to understand that Sanon admitted to certain ill-advised uses of the funds, including an Uber ride post a car crash, as she faced personal financial strife, shared NBC Miami.
