Visitors looking to explore the natural majesty of the Grand Canyon can now arrive at an upgraded airport facility. The Grand Canyon National Park Airport, overseen by the Arizona Department of Transportation, has announced the completion of a significant runway rehabilitation. Clocking in at a $12 million price tag, the upgrades promise to enhance safety and bolster operational efficiency.
The project took a span of just over two months to complete, an effort to carefully minimize the disruption to steadily function airport operations, the tenants, and myriad travelers who depend on this key gateway to one of the U.S.'s most treasured natural wonders. Improvements include a resurfaced runway, a reconfigured taxiway intersection, as well as refreshed apron markings and updated signage to align with current Federal Aviation Administration standards.
David Reffner, Director of Grand Canyon National Park Airport, highlighted the efforts and partnership that made the project successful. "This project reflects the strength of our partnership with the FAA and our shared commitment to safe, efficient access to the Grand Canyon," Reffner stated, according to ADOT’s project webpage. He further expressed pride in delivering the project on time, attributing this achievement to the "dedication and expertise of our project team."
Funding for the renovation was sourced primarily from an FAA Airport Improvement Program grant, with additional matching funds contributed by the state. This financial framework underscores Arizona's dedication to maintaining and consistently improving its aviation infrastructure, thereby enhancing the travel experience for all visitors. The project team included local and national talent with Fann Contracting heading up the construction, Mead & Hunt providing design and project management expertise, and contributions from both ADOT and FAA staff.
