Residents on the Cheniere side of Grand Isle, from the bridge to the Jefferson-Lafourche parish line, are advised to boil their water before use due to a malfunctioning storage tank valve. The Jefferson Parish Water Department, in coordination with the Louisiana Department of Health, issued the notice as a precaution. The advisory will remain in effect until officials confirm that the water is safe for normal use.
As per the Jefferson Parish government website, residents are instructed not to drink tap water without boiling or disinfecting it first. The advisory recommends boiling water for one full minute or using unscented liquid chlorine laundry bleach to disinfect it. This applies to all water used for drinking, cooking, or hygiene purposes. People with weakened immune systems, infants, and the elderly are encouraged to seek additional guidance from healthcare providers.
To boil water safely, bring it to a rolling boil for at least one minute in a clean container. To improve taste after boiling, water can be shaken in a bottle or poured between clean containers. Alternatively, disinfect water by adding 1/8 teaspoon of unscented liquid chlorine bleach per gallon of water and letting it sit for at least 30 minutes before use.
Officials are currently collecting and testing water samples. Residents should continue following the advisory until notified by the Jefferson Parish Water Department or the Louisiana Department of Health that the water is safe. Updates will be posted on the Jefferson Parish Government website.
