If you're in the market for a career change and have a heart for public service, the Henry County Sheriff's Office might have an opportunity for you. They're currently on the lookout for new merit deputies to become part of a team that prides itself on making a difference in the community. Applications opened on September 29, and will stay open through 4 PM on October 29, 2025.
Arguably one of the more enticing aspects of the job is the starting salary, which, come January 2026 will be $65,299—a figure that includes a $2,500 yearly stipend just for residing in the county. Additionally, once recruits complete ILEA Tier 1, they're greeted with a $2,500 hiring bonus. The role also promises a plethora of perks for its officers, such as a take-home car with statewide use, no zone restrictions for the nearly 400 square mile patrol area, and a brand new workout room equipped with the latest gear.
Benefits for this role are generous too. The Henry County Sheriff's Office offers full health, vision, and dental plans, along with paid time off and benefits. The department's vacation accrual is also progressive, starting with three weeks for those with 1-5 years of service and increasing up to five weeks for those serving over a decade. Not to mention, there's 17 paid holidays per year and sick leave that accrues at four hours per month. According to an announcement made on the Sheriff's Office Facebook page, merit deputies also enjoy a matrix pay increase of $2,500 every five years, up to $15,000.
For interested applicants, the testing dates have been set: Physical Agility on November 1, 2025, followed by a Written Exam November 8, 2025. The Deputy Interview Board will take place on December 3, 2025, and the Merit Board Interview will be held on December 9, 2025. It's worth noting that there's no written or physical agility test requirement for laterals who are currently employed by a police agency and have Tier 1 certification from ILEA—a clear pathway for experienced law enforcement professionals looking for a transition. "Be part of the future. Join the Henry County Sheriff’s Office team today," read the invitation from Sheriff John M. Sproles, as per the Henry County Sheriff's Office.
Applications can be picked up in person at the Sheriff’s Office or requested via email. The Sheriff's Office, located at 1033 Ron Lampey Way in New Castle, IN, denotes a new facility that promises new vision and energy for all who join their ranks.
