A fatal shooting on Indianapolis' northwest side yesterday afternoon has left 38-year-old William E. Deaton II dead and local authorities searching for a suspect. Responding to a call near 5200 Austral Drive around 4 p.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers discovered Deaton with gunshot wounds, as reported by FOX59. The Marion County Coroner's Office confirmed Deaton's identity the following day.
IMPD officer Tommy Thompson, in a statement obtained by FOX59, described the violence as “senseless” and “stupid,” noting the profound impact on the families involved. "We have victims who are no longer alive. Their families will feel this reeling grieving. And then the other end of the spectrum, we need to think about is the individuals pulling the trigger," Thompson said. He also emphasized the department's commitment to holding the perpetrator accountable, in collaboration with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
The suspect, believed to have fled on foot using nearby trail systems, remains at large. Authorities, who have yet to release a description of the suspect, are currently canvassing the area for evidence and reviewing surveillance footage. Witnesses are being interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation, with details trickling in to inform the search, as explained in coverage from WRTV.
Although this incident may have been targeted, IMPD suggests there is no immediate threat to the community at large. However, this shooting is part of a string of violence across the city, with other recent shootings on N. Concord Street and Guion Road, according to, FOX59. Anyone with information related to the Austral Drive shooting is encouraged to contact Detective Daniel Hiatt at the IMPD Homicide Office or to submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana, as noted by WTHR.
