The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) recently used social media to explain who is responsible for maintaining different types of roads across the state.
According to INDOT, state highways, U.S. highways, and interstates—such as State Road 67, U.S. 31, or I-465—fall under the agency’s jurisdiction. County roads are maintained by their respective counties, while streets within city limits that aren’t part of a state highway are the responsibility of local city governments.
INDOT said the clarification aims to help residents know where to direct maintenance reports, especially amid frequent construction projects and weather-related road damage. The department added that understanding roadway jurisdiction can speed up response times and ensure concerns reach the right agency.
