An investigation is currently underway by deputies from the North Coastal Sheriff's Station following a major traffic accident that occurred in Encinitas, which involved a juvenile pedestrian and two vehicles. According to a release from the San Diego County Sheriff's Office, the crash occurred yesterday at the intersection of S. Coast Hwy 101 and W. D Street.
Reports detail that around 5:59 PM, a 2026 Chevy Silverado and a 2022 Toyota Prius were involved in the collision. The Silverado, driven by Edward De La Torre, is said to have been traveling northbound when it rear-ended the Prius, subsequently careening off the road to inadvertently strike through the façade of the Gelato 101 establishment located at 480 S. Coast Hwy 101.
Dramatic moments ensued as a male juvenile inside the Gelato 101 was hit and pinned beneath the vehicle. Swift action by first responders enabled them to extricate the child, who, while trapped, maintained consciousness and was breathing. The minor was promptly transported to Rady Children’s Hospital for a more comprehensive evaluation and necessary medical treatment.
De La Torre himself sustained injuries in the incident; however, they were reported to be non-life-threatening. He was taken to a local hospital for care. The individuals occupying the Prius were lucky to escape physical harm, as per the paramedics' evaluation on the scene. Following the incident, De La Torre was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, clearly indicating that the crash was not merely an accident but also an alleged crime.
The Sheriff's Department urges anyone knowledgeable about this incident to come forward and has provided contact information for the North Coastal Sheriff's Station to facilitate this.
