The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) has officially begun to directly manage the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a major shuffle in the state's government services infrastructure that took effect as of last Wednesday. This change is part of the state’s Project One Door initiative, aiming to consolidate a variety of benefit applications under one umbrella. By moving SNAP from the Department of Children & Family Services (DCFS) to LDH, the state hopes to simplify the process for residents, enhance staff efficiency, and streamline the delivery of family services.
For those relying on SNAP benefits, it's crucial to understand that there will be no interruptions or eligibility criteria changes due to this transition. The LDH's goal is to seamlessly integrate these services to easily align with other health-related programs, such as Medicaid. Applicants should continue to use the LDH website to apply and access resources. Even though no immediate changes are in place, the Department pledges to keep recipients in the loop as new updates go live, which they are actively working to seamlessly roll out.
According to the LDH's announcement, the Secretary of LDH, Bruce Greenstein, expressed his anticipation for the program's future, noting, "The Department is excited about the future of the SNAP program." He further added, "Our team has worked hard to ensure this transition is seamless for recipients. I want to thank Governor Landry for his leadership in making this a reality. This marks an important step forward — not only improving how government delivers services, but helping move individuals from dependence to independence."
In addition to SNAP, the LDH will be taking over several other services from DCFS, including Disability Determination Services (DDS), the Electronic Healthy Incentives Project (eHIP), the Family Independence Temporary Assistance Program (FITAP), the Kinship Care Subsidy Program (KCSP), and SUN Bucks. Those with existing inquiries or needing assistance with their benefits can continue to reach out to the same contact information previously used with DCFS. For any questions or concerns, the department encourages individuals to call 888-524-3578 or to email [email protected] for support.
