In anticipation of significant changes to SNAP benefits, which could leave many local families struggling to put food on the table, a collaborative response dubbed the Memphis Cares Initiative has been launched in the city of Memphis. The proactive program brings together the City of Memphis, Shelby County Government, and a number of key community and faith-based organizations to fill the impending gap in assistance.
Under the initiative, coordinated by Mayor Paul Young and his convened coalition, an extensive network, including United Way of the Mid South, Mid South Food Bank, and the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis, is rallying to safeguard food security for impacted Memphians. One of the critical adjustments being made is the expansion of pantry capacities along with the exploration of extended service hours, which will help accommodate working families who might not make it to daytime food distribution sites.
Mayor Young has voiced the collective determination to uphold community support systems in the face of adversity. In a statement obtained by the city's official website, he said, "We will stand together as a community and make sure every Memphian has access to food and dignity. Memphis has always shown up for one another. This moment will be no different."
