Next Wednesday marks a significant day for Miami-Dade County as Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, along with county commissioners and Department of Transportation and Public Works officials, will inaugurate the county's first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system named Metro Express. Designed to combat traffic woes along the US-1 corridor, the service provides a new, electrifying artery for commuters traveling from Florida City to Dadeland South Metrorail Station. Miami-Dade County's official announcement details the program's launch event, set to begin at 10:30 a.m. at the 152nd Street/Coral Reef Drive BRT Station.
Miami-Dade's move, aimed at connecting South Dade to various key points of interests such as job hubs and education institutions, features a 20-mile stretch of dedicated lanes for the Metro Express. Prioritized during rush hour and protected by gate arms, this BRT system not only promises to be the longest all-electric service nationwide but also a beacon of efficient public transit connecting people to broader possibilities.
Featuring 14 new BRT stations replete with comforts including air conditioning, bike-friendly options, and free Wi-Fi, the new system was borne from the $300 million Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit (SMART) Program. The funding was equally split amongst Miami-Dade County through a surtax, the Florida Department of Transportation, and the Federal Transit Administration. The service further boasts modern amenities that are anticipated to deliver a novel, superior transit experience, revealed in a proposition vested by the communal dedication to infrastructural progress.
Interested parties are encouraged to confirm their attendance for the ribbon-cutting ceremony by noon on Friday.
