Travelers passing through Miami International Airport are in for an artistic treat. The airport’s latest exhibition, titled "Curious Geometries," is a celebration of the handmade, featuring quilts by Miami-based artist Regina Durante Jestrow. On display at the Gate D31 Gallery until March 9, 2026, Jestrow's exhibition stitches together the local culture with her unique artistic vision, reusing fabrics sourced from various Miami locales, including pieces of MIA itself, according to Miami-Dade County News.
The eye-catching textile works are sprawling across the gallery walls, ranging from stretched compositions to free-form art quilts. Unfortunately, stitched with a touch of improvisation, each piece highlights the playful interaction between geometry and gesture—akin to an aerial dance over Miami’s ecologies. The artist told Miami-Dade County News that through these works, “These materials speak to the urgency of textile waste and connect my work to the material culture of my Miami surroundings.”
Jestrow's techniques are a nod to the quilting tradition, yet they defy convention with a modern twist. The pieces are rich with narratives, both personal and collective. Quilt fans might recognize the homage to historic patterns, one example being "Spiderweb 3 – MIA (2025)," where Jestrow draws inspiration from the classic spiderweb design using materials from the MIA’s Interior Design section, among other sources.
Having grown up in Queens, NY, and relocating to Miami, Jestrow's love for textile art started early, influenced by lessons in sewing and crocheting from her mother. Reporting from the comfort of her Miami home studio, where the sewing machine remains central, Jestrow continues to weave her passion into every quilt. Her work has earned a place in esteemed collections and has been recognized with several artist residencies and grants, including the prestigious South Florida Cultural Consortium award in 2023, indicating a career entertained by both critical acclaim and the respect of peers, as mentioned on the county's website.
For those who appreciate the interplay of art and sustainability, the "Curious Geometries" exhibition represents an interwoven tapestry of ecological consciousness and vivid storytelling. Visitors traveling through Miami International Airport between now and March 2026 have a unique opportunity to experience how Regina Durante Jestrow reimagines the art of quilting, one stitch at a time.
