Residents of the Mount Greenwood neighborhood are on high alert following a series of vehicle break-ins and garage burglaries. According to the Chicago Police Department, a string of thefts occurred on September 26th, primarily targeting work vehicles and resulting in the loss of tools, as well as garage entries.
The perpetrators, reported to be groups of two to four males in their 20s, carried out these crimes by forcefully entering the vehicles, often by breaking windows and, in some cases, using stolen garage door openers to infiltrate garages. This rash of criminal activity hit several blocks in quick succession, starting at around 2:05 AM, with at least one offender reportedly armed. Specific locations mentioned include the 2500 block of W 117th S., the 11400 block of Fairfield, the 11000 blocks of S Christina and S Fairfield, and the 10900 and 10800 blocks of S Trumbull—all within the 22nd District.
Witness descriptions of the individuals involved have facilitated a shared offender profile: approximately four young males, whose attire included hoodies, traveling in a black vehicle. In light of the incidents, the CPD is urging community members to exercise caution, advising them to be vigilant of their surroundings and the security of their belongings. Increased awareness, avoiding confrontation with potential assailants, and promptly reporting suspicious activities to the authorities are emphasized as key measures for safety.
Community members have been advised to not leave valuables in plain view within their vehicles or garage opener devices visible, ensuring that they lock doors and survive any captured video footage to law enforcement; moreover, it's recommended to not engage with the assailants but instead gather any unique identifiers—such as physical characteristics or vehicle details—and provide them to the police, reinforcing that one's safety is of paramount concern over material possessions.
