The Boring Company has started to move earth in Nashville as the Music City Loop, an ambitious underground transit system, begins to take form. According to a WSMV report, the project is to be privately funded and is planned to connect downtown and the Convention Center to BNA airport with a transit time of approximately eight minutes via a network of tunnels. Already, the company is deep in the process of securing the needed 45 permits and approvals required before construction can definitively begin.
At Lot 16 near the State Capitol, The Boring Company is establishing the launch site for two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). WSMV reports that shoring and excavation for the launch pit have significantly advanced, and a conveyer system for removing excavated material is being installed. Additionally, the company is looking to avoid using diesel generators by securing grid power in collaboration with NES, a move that reflects an eye towards sustainability even at this early stage of construction.
A central focus of the project's advancement, as Williamson Source outlines, is the ongoing design and permitting phase. The company disclosed that geotechnical borings along the proposed alignment are being coordinated with local utilities, and environmental impact assessments are being conducted by a local consultant. Moreover, conversations about tunnel construction terms with the Tennessee Department of Transportation and safety reviews with the City of Nashville and Nashville Fire Department are also in progress.
The company has not only been busy laying the groundwork for the physical construction of the loop but is also heavily engaging with the local community. As cited by Williamson Source, The Boring Company has met with local leaders, partnered with over 70 community groups, and is coordinating with local universities for student and graduate opportunities. To actively be part of the city's social fabric, they have taken part in food drives and career fairs throughout Nashville.
Challenges remain, however, with the company acknowledging hurdles such as securing necessary approvals to tunnel beneath critical state and rail infrastructure. According to a statement from The Boring Company on The Tennessean, "At this stage, advancing design and permitting go hand in hand as TBC is developing engineered plans that are being reviewed by the relevant government agencies." Finalizing agreements for station placement at the Nashville International Airport and completing lease terms with TDOT also rank among the project's immediate concerns.
The Boring Company, founded by Elon Musk, has indicated a commitment to transparency regarding the Music City Loop, as shown by a blog post promising bimonthly progress updates. The project, which was announced in July, has also drawn interest from potential station sites, including the Music City Center and downtown Nashville areas, which could herald additional routes and an expansion of the high-speed tunnel network in the future.
