The Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT), in partnership with Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS), is set to encourage students to actively participate in National Walk to School Day. This event will see pupils, faculty, and community volunteers making their way on foot to school at Carter-Lawrence Elementary. Taking place on the first Wednesday of every October, this initiative aims to highlight the importance of safe pedestrian pathways for Nashville’s youth.
As detailed in a statement released by NDOT, the starting location is scheduled to be the Operation Stand Down Tennessee Parking Lot, with participants expected to convene at 7:30 a.m. Esteemed figures set to attend include Carter-Lawrence Elementary's own principal, Dr. Sherleta Sanders, NDOT leader Diana Alarcon, and MNPS Board Member TK Fayne, each slated to deliver remarks. The walk is designed to actively engage participants in dialogues surrounding pedestrian infrastructure and safety while also seeking to foster a stronger sense of community as it stitches together the shared journey of students, teachers, and local residents.
Carter-Lawrence Elementary proudly lists itself among the 65 Metro Nashville schools actively participating in the ‘walk to school day’ event. These events promote not only the physical health of students by encouraging them to keep fit through walking, but they also thrust into the spotlight the more significant conversation on the safety of their daily routes to and from school. With the efforts of NDOT and MNPS, this initiative is part of a broader Vision Zero strategy aimed at reducing traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries across the city.
The ‘walk to school day’ is more than just a one-time annual affair; it symbolizes a city-wide commitment to making Nashville streets safer and more navigable for the youngest among us. It is an opportunity for the community to come together and show support for the collective well-being of schoolchildren. According to a release from the Nashville government website, the walk will culminate at the gates of Carter-Lawrence Elementary School, a statement that showcases the goal of creating tangible endpoints for communal efforts in safe transit advocacy.
