The Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission is scheduled to convene for a one-day meeting on Friday, as announced by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA). Taking place beginning at 9 a.m. at the TWRA's Region II Ray Bell Building in Nashville, the agenda is set with several key items for discussion.
One of the primary topics on the docket is the Deer Baiting Privilege License, a hot-button issue stemming from recent legislative action. Joe Benedict, TWRA’s Chief of Wildlife & Forestry, plans to preview proposed rules, which include details on acceptable bait types, permitted quantities, and applicable guidelines for the use of bait under this new license, which will be effective starting August 1, 2026. Following the meeting, stakeholders will have the opportunity to provide their input before the definitive version is brought up for action at the December meeting, according to an announcement on the TWRA website.
Further anticipations for the assembly include an overview of the North Cumberland WMA OHV permit by Brandon Wear, TWRA Deputy Director of Field Operations. The permit's price and structure were previously established by the TFWC as part of the license rule, and the upcoming meeting's discussions will focus on the operational language and fee structures associated with the new permit, which was outlined in the appended sections to the governing rules.
On the agenda as well is an essential briefing on biodiversity. Josh Campbell, TWRA's Chief of Biodiversity, will outline proposed amendments to the rulebook regarding Threatened and Endangered Species. These revisions come as a result of a biennial review conducted by the agency in 2025, reflecting the state's ongoing commitment to preserving its diverse ecological heritage.
The day will also celebrate accomplishments within the TWRA, with the presentation of annual awards. Honorees for Wildlife Biologist of the Year, Wildlife Technician of the Year, as well as Biodiversity Biologist of the Year will receive recognition for their excellence in service before the Commission.
