The New Orleans City Council has approved an ordinance designed to protect the privacy of crime and accident victims. Authored by District E Councilmember Oliver M. Thomas, Ordinance No. 35,229 establishes city policy restricting the release of sensitive images related to serious incidents, according to a news release from the New Orleans City Council.
The measure prohibits the public release of unobscured images or videos showing deceased or seriously injured individuals, with limited exceptions. These exceptions include use by law enforcement agencies for investigations, training, or apprehensions, as well as cases where victims or families request disclosure, during court proceedings, or when required by state public records law.
Councilmember Thomas stated that the ordinance aims to balance transparency with compassion and justice. The policy is intended to ensure that victims and their families are treated with respect while maintaining access to materials necessary for legal and law enforcement purposes.
