Flu season is just around the corner, and New Orleans is gearing up with easily accessible vaccines for both influenza and COVID-19. In a recent update from the New Orleans Health Department, availability has spread out wider than a bayou during a flood season – but with much healthier consequences. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has made it known that influenza vaccinations are ready for anyone older than 6 months, and as of yesterday, they've also included COVID-19 vaccinations on the recommended schedule for the 2025-2026 year, targeting adults and high-risk groups with additional vaccines like RSV, pneumonia, and shingles.

According to the NOHD, this move is part of a broader strategy to ensure public health. "These updated recommendations make it easier for everyone to protect themselves and their families from flu and COVID-19," Dr. Jennifer Avegno, Health Director of the NOHD, was quoted by the department's official press release. For most people, vaccines are safe and free, putting minimal strain on wallets across the city.

Pharmacy giant Walgreens is taking center stage in these immunization efforts. "Walgreens is proud to offer the 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccines in Louisiana to eligible individuals ages 3 and older, no prescription required," Brian Strong, Director of Immunizations at Walgreens, told the NOHD. They've rolled out several convenient methods to get these vaccines, including walking into any Walgreens pharmacy, scheduling an appointment online, using their app, texting, or calling their dedicated hotline.

Guidance from the CDC suggests adults should consult with a healthcare professional to decide if the COVID-19 vaccine is right for them. Parents with children below 18 are encouraged to reach out to their pediatrician or pharmacy. It's important to note that prescriptions are no longer required to access COVID-19 vaccines at pharmacies or vaccination events, as confirmed by the NOHD. And for individuals worried about the cost, insurance coverage is anticipated to continue to offer protection against any out-of-pocket expenses.
