His brother, Jackson Payne, touched upon the breadth of Mason's impact, saying, "I know he touched the lives of many, and he always brightened the day when he showed up," in a statement obtained by KSL. Jackson spoke of Mason's infectious spirit, one that managed to, even in the simplest of interactions, leave an indelible mark on those around him. Peace officers continue to search for the perpetrator, even as the community struggles to come to terms with the void left by the young boy's passing.
At the vigil, where candles flickered against the encroaching dusk, attendees released balloons skyward in a symbolic gesture of release and remembrance. Alex Behling, a sophomore and fellow JROTC cadet with whom Mason served, shared the deep sorrow this loss has wrought upon their contingent. "I knew him as a friend and my first sergeant, and knowing him both ways hurts," Behling told KUTV.
