Commuters familiar with Phoenix's traffic landscape need to brace for a significant change. Starting at 11:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, the westbound Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) on-ramp at 27th Avenue will be closed for reconstruction, a process slated to take about 60 days. This closure is part of a broader freeway widening project that kicked off in 2024 to accommodate increased vehicular load, according to an announcement by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT).
The disruptions will likely cause drivers planning to access the westbound Loop 101 at 27th Avenue to consider alternate entry points, such as the on-ramp at 35th Avenue. The agency has indicated that this closure, which nestles in the grand scheme of a $140 million revamp, is scheduled to reopen the on-ramp early December, which drivers who regularly ply this route should note.
This larger infrastructure endeavor seeks to add one lane in each direction between Interstate 17 and 75th Avenue, aiming for a completion in spring 2027. In addition to the lane expansions, the project's scope extends to bridge widenings, frontage road improvements, and enhanced freeway lighting. Work on adding retaining and screen walls is also underway, as highlighted in an update from ADOT on their official website.
Coordinated efforts between ADOT and local city governments, including Phoenix, Glendale, and Peoria, underscore the regional interest in the project. It falls under the purview of the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), the metropolitan planning organization managing the area's blueprint for transportation. Sacred in its funding, the project draws from Prop 400—a countywide half-cent sales tax initiative for transportation improvements that Maricopa County voters passed in 2004, something essential for local denizens to remember.
